6 strings? 4 strings? 10 strings?

I'm asked on occasion "why the 6 string bass?".  For me it's about the range of the instrument.  I'm sure 99.9% of what I do could easily be accomplished on a five string bass or even a four string with an extender key but there have been times when that high C string comes in handy and D just isn't low enough.  In much of LoNero's music, I'm on that low B string quite a bit.  For any songs that don't require the extended low or high range, I often like to play my Fender Jazz bass.  There are two songs on the upcoming album that are punk influenced or as we call them "punkstrumentals".  On the recording I wanted to get the bass sound as authentic as possible so I did something you won't see from me very often.  I played them on the Fender with a pick! ;-)

I've heard a lot of commentary on extended range basses.  Some negative and some positive.  It really comes down to your personal taste and if you want to explore the extended range.

Do you slap, pop, or pluck?  Do you play four, five, six, seven, twelve strings?  It's entirely up to you and if your music calls for it.  It's all about the right tool for the right job.
